Barcelona, Spain
The Whale is the result of an elaborate plan to provide Barcelona with children's playgrounds of the highest level. It all started with an initiative called 'ciutat jugable' (playable city), inspired by the philosophy of the renowned Tonucci. Children themselves were consulted on how they wanted the play area to be, and they chose the idea of the Whale. The architecture firm QUERALT SUAU was responsible for the project, and LAPPSET ESPAÑA was chosen by them to collaborate in all phases of the design as well as for its manufacturing. The element has an extraordinary complexity as it has an interior volume of over 200 m3 perfectly utilized with different types of mazes. Even the whale's fin is not just a simple ornamental element as it is connected to a pendulum that the children themselves can move.
